I am an avid gardener.
Early in my career as an artist, customers would ask what types of flowers were represented in my work, and I didn’t know. As I began to educate myself, a passion for gardening developed which led to my decision to undertake training to become a University of Maryland Extension Howard County Master Gardener.
Since completing the course in 2005, I have continued to benefit from the knowledge and talent of my fellow Master Gardeners, many of whom generously share their gardens with me to serve as inspiration for my work. Probably because I am an artist and love making things, two aspects of gardening that fascinate me are composting and vermicomposting. I love the idea of taking what other people consider garbage and making it into something valuable---black gold! Enriching my soil with compost derived from my yard waste and kitchen scraps allows my gardens to grow healthfully, organically and sustainably.
For many years I taught vermicomposting workshops and I use my compost to grow vegetables in a community garden.
I recently put together a powerpoint presentation on weeds and insect pests in the vegetable garden. You can view the PowerPoint presentation: Know Your Enemy: Strategies for Dealing with Weeds and Insect Pests in the Community Vegetable Garden. You can also download a trifold that summarizes the powerpoint presentation.
